Monday 27th October, 2008 HELP PLEASE!!!! at 17:33 GMT by brian I have what might be an unusual request. I am getting ready to put together my next book called MANCHILD 4. And I thought it would be really great if I could re-print an assortment of the kind of stuff I drew back in the eighties when I was a punk rock pen pal who drew little silly cartoons. I have a humorous article that I have written, put aside for this event. But I need help to pull it off. For anyone out there that might remember writing to me, trading stuff with me and having me draw stuff for you: Is there anyway that you can reach into that box of old stuff that everybody no doubt has, and pull out that old Brian Walsby drawing that I did for you twenty years or so ago? And if you have been able to do that, would it be too much to ask for a scan of said drawing and send it to me for the possibility of having it be re-printed in the next book that I am about to do? my e-mail address is: reluctantking@hotmail.com individual credit will of course be given for the help. A 300 dpi jpeg would do nicely. My goal here is to have a affectionate look back into my past, with a dash of humor involved, and that is pretty much it. thanks for your time! Brian Walsby Wednesday 1st October, 2008 I was on NPR today!! at 21:38 GMT by brian here is the link: North Carolina Public Radio WUNC - SOT... - http://wunc.org/tsot/archive Friday 12th September, 2008 brushes with fame compilation cd featuring three bands that BRAIN WALSBY played drums in!!! at 11:31 GMT by brian OKAY KIDS, IT IS DONE. "BRUSHES WITH FAME" IS MY LITTLE NON BIG DEAL WAY OF GETTING SOME OF THIS FORGOTTEN MUSIC THAT I WAS LUCKY TO BE INVOLVED WITH STRAIGHT OUT OF MY COMPUTER AND INTO YOUR STEREO! IT FEATURES THREE BANDS THAT I USED TO BE IN: SIBERIAN, DADDY AND THE PATTY DUKE SYNDROME. HERE IS WHAT YOU GET: A HOUR PLUS LONG BURNED CD OF THREE OF THE GREATEST BANDS THAT MOST PEOPLE HAVEN'T HEARD, CHOCK FULL OF HITS, MIRTH AND MAYHEM. PLUS YOU GET A THREE PAGE INSERT THAT WON'T FIT INTO THE CD. EACH BAND GETS A PAGE, SO YOU CAN READ WHAT THE DEAL WAS BEHIND SIBERIAN, DADDY AND THE PATTY DUKE SYNDROME. IT IS KIND OF LIKE A CD VERSION OF A NEW FOUND ARTISTIC FRIEND OF YOURS PUTTING TOGETHER A CASSETTE TAPE OF ALL OF THE BANDS THAT HE/SHE HAS DONE. EXCEPT THAT THIS IS GOOD. REAL GOOD! NEED MORE? HERE IS SOME MORE INFO: SIBERIAN: 1. Insomnia 2. Camera 3. Josh 4. How does it feel to be wrong about everything? 5. role modeling 6. killing moon (live) DADDY: 1. Dungeoner 2. Leather Rabbit 3. the balled of Vinnie Moron 4. sex kite 5. i liked it better when you were dead 6. lonely college student predator PATTY DUKE SYNDROME: 1. tony eyeing leslie 2. song for Bob Schick 3. song for Sara Bell 4. song for Erectus Monotone 5. anarchy time 6. trashed (i was drunk) BRUSHES WITH FAME was a name that I had for a long time that was sort of poking fun at how I have played with all of these famous people before they got famous..whatever that means. The idea of doing a retrospective of some of the best music that I was fortunate enough to be involved in is an old fantasy of mine but despite several attempts to do something like this both legally and illegally I have always stopped short of it. One of the problems was that I wanted to include everything that I have ever done..but that is just too much stuff. And maybe some of it just sucks, and I don't know it. Another problem on the legal front is the fact that some of the folks I have played with ha vent been too cool with the idea of this stuff coming out on a massive scale. What is a attention starved drummer to do? Well, in all seriousness the main reason is that all three of the bands that I have narrowed this down to, SIBERIAN, DADDY and THE PATTY DUKE SYNDROME have all recorded music that to this day I am still very proud of. And since I can't see a time soon where this will get out there, I figure I would use my limited "cult status" to offer it to anyone out there who is interested. These bands are orphans that have needed a home for years, and although this isn't the best home or the most ideal home, it will have to do for right now. You send me a little bit of money, I send you the music and hopefully everyone will be happy. The bands: SIBERIAN was a very understated band that featured mostly pals of mine that were big metalheads but were sick of playing that style of music so instead we tried our hand at melodic rock. I really liked our music a whole lot. DADDY was a tornado of nastiness that featured old Friends playing very loud and brutal music before the black cloud of negativity swallowed everyone. The music holds up, and has a pretty good sense of humor to boot. PATTY DUKE of course is the band that features Ryan Adams and Jere Mcilwean, a short lived trio that showed great promise before imploding. I feel like we struck time capsule status with this stuff..it still sounds fucking great! And there is a uncredited long surprise at the end of this..you might be able to guess who it is. So it is my sincere hope that BRUSHES WITH FAME will help shed a little light on some gems that fell between the cracks. I feel it is a really consistent compilation that is chock full of hits. And a Echo and the Bunnymen cover to boot. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SPENDING EIGHT MEASLY DOLLARS..THAT IS RIGHT: $8!! WRITE ME BACK AT: reluctantking@hotmail.com or go to snail mail way and write to me at: 412 Jones Franklin Rd Raleigh NC 27606. And you will get a cd that will change your life. Okay, it won't do that, but it might change your afternoon. thanks again. Saturday 6th September, 2008 more news and online begging! at 18:16 GMT by brian Acting like you are broke and the fear of being broke is a great motivator. So hear me out, kids: In order for me to continue to freelance I must bug as many people in internetland as possible to remind everyone that I am ready and able to draw stuff for you, whether it is a flyer for your band or a single cover or a cd cover or a poster-wahtever-I am the man for the job. Seriously. I am ready to draw my socks off for you. So hit me up at: reluctantking@hotmail.com. And don't worry about being exspensive. None of my clients are on the cover of Spin magazine, and I am very affordable. In the meantime, look towards the future for the following things: 1. "Daydream Nation" by Double Negative, our second album. 2. Double Negative playing in England this December at the three day ALL TOMMOROW's PARTIES festival. 3. At least three more Double Negative musical projects- a single, a split single and a song on a compliation single. 4. MANCHILD 4: the next Brian Walsby comic book, featuring all new work and another cd release to feature both MELVINS and (you guessed it) DOUBLE NEGATIVE. This is a even greater departure from the previous books as the punk stuff is weeded out in favor of more collaberations, another MELVINS tour dairy and a loveable "I Quit!" gathering of fun stories people mailed me about funny ways that they quit their own jobs. We are getting ready to discuss ad rates and get the ball rolling. Stay tuned. And also in the "project without a home" department: It looks like that six year in the making reissue project featuring one of the many bands I have been in, SHINY BEAST, has once again bit the dust. I am not even going to get into it, since it wouldn't be nice or fair to anyone. So if anyone out there cares, remembers the band and happens to have a record label that wants to waste their hard earned money on such a project, I got the material and the designer has the files....just saying. Maybe one day it shall become a reality but then again, maybe not..life will go on regardless. stay dry, Brian Tuesday 2nd September, 2008 MANCHILD FOUR! at 16:07 GMT by brian After another power meeting held today, the affable Charles Cardello has given the greenlight on MANCHILD FOUR. We are at the start of this whole thing and ad rates haven't been decided yet, but if anyone wants to advertise in it, please drop a line and we'll pencil you in, and of course we will let you know what the ad rates will be in due time. It is never too early to drum up interest, right? Right. MACNHILD FOUR will also boast another cd that will be slipped inside. It will be some sort of dual release consisting of some recent live MELVINS music as well as something from DOUBLE NEGATIVE. Again, details are slim at best for right now but this is what we are aiming for. All of the artwork that will be included so far is ninety percent new with a few surprises. Anyways, just trying to spread the word. Thanks to all - Brian |
